York has announced that it has filed patents on a further refinement of
the gel formulation of abafungin (the API in AbasolTM). It has now
revealed that the inherent advantage of this formulation is that it enables
significant penetration of the drug through the nail and skin. Concentrations at the site of the infections are more than sufficient to kill the causative organisms responsible for these serious nail infections.
York has also indicated that this new formulation will have cosmetic advantages (no hard gloss on or around the nail and lacking the shiny
look of a lacquer) as well as use advantages, obviating nail filing to roughen the surface of the nail to apply lacquer or remove previously present lacquer.
Objective's view:
This is a further refinement of an announcement made earlier in the year
related to the AbagelTM formulation for Onychomycosis which we
reviewed in our June update on York Pharma. It reveals some additional
details (cosmetic and usage related) that have now been fully embodied
in patent filings.
Clearly the process of refinement may be expected to have taken some time but we are still confident that a 2010 introduction (as envisaged in our Core Valuation) remains feasible for such a formulation particularly if AbafunginTM for skin (with the same API) is already on the market.
